  • Our Future Farmers: John E. Ikerd, Author Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics
Our Future Farmers: John E. Ikerd, Author & Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics
    Duration: 01h02min | 11/04/2011

John E. Ikerd, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics, University of Missouri Columbia, College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. Join is for this hour long conversation with one of the unsung heroes of the sustainability movement. This prolific writer, speaker and teacher sits down with Shane to explore our shared future. As Ikerd says, "We are at a critical time in agriculture and cannot go on like this. If [rural] towns are really lucky they can get a prison. If you cannot get that, maybe a landfill. and if all else fails, a CAFO. This model of rural economic development will not work. It is also a time of great possibilities, we are going through a period of great transformation. we are moving out of the industrial era and into something fundamentally different. The big question is the one of sustainability. We have gone though decades of extraction, and its gone. so how do we meet the needs of the present without diminishing the needs of the future? There is a growing realization that when you use up the productivity of nature and of people you realize that there is no place to get anything anymore. The financial crisis, the gulf. we cannot continue to extract and exploit. Going through the transition we must rethink every aspect of our lives and when we are done our lives will be fundamentally changed."

  • BP Oil Spill Update: Jackie Savitz, Pollution Campaign Director for Oceana
BP Oil Spill Update: Jackie Savitz, Pollution Campaign Director for Oceana
    Duration: 44min | 04/11/2010

Jackie Savitz, Pollution Campaign Director for Ocena. Jacqueline Savitz to the Obama Administration’s Decision to Lift the Deepwater Drilling Moratorium This is an incredibly disconcerting and unjustified move, that could open the door for the next great oil disaster. Oil spills are common. The question is not whether there will be another spill but when. While the recent BP spill occurred on a well permitted by a previous administration, and based on regulations that were not devised by the Obama administration, that will not be the case with the next spill. When the Department of Interior devised its three criteria to be met before the moratorium would be lifted, they seemed reasonable. The industry would have to demonstrate that it could prevent a spill, contain a spill and respond to a spill. But those criteria have not been satisfied and therefore, lifting the moratorium is premature. Whether new safety requirements will be sufficient and whether they will be followed are open questions. Another spill could happen tomorrow, next week or next month, and it may not be easy to contain, as we saw with the BP spill. .http://na.oceana.org Listen >>> Email us your questions for the guests to onair@sustainable1000.com, Tweet us at @sustainable1000, IM on Gtalk @ vannShane or call-in your questions or comments to (347)996-3601. Flint creek winds around and behind the farm flowing north to the Tennessee river -- which provides our area’s drinking water. They are bottomland. They flood. Historically, farmers and landowners destroy beaver dams on the creek because they flood working lands, keeping low land under water much of the year instead of just seasonally. The first farm decision they made was to give the beavers carte blanche and wait to see what happened. >>> Email us show ideas or interview requests to info@sustainable1000.com, Tweet us at @vannShane, IM on GTalk @ vannShane or call-in your questions or comments to (347)996-3601. • A conversation with Tim DeChristopher from Bidder70.org
A conversation with Tim DeChristopher from Bidder70.org
    Duration: 39min | 05/08/2010

Enjoy a delightful conversation with Utah's activist Tim DeChristopher and Shane Snipes. About DeChristopher from Huffington Report >>> "The epic fight to ward off global warming and transform the energy system that is at the core of our planet's economy takes many forms: huge global days of action, giant international conferences like the one that just failed in Copenhagen, small gestures in the homes of countless people. But there are a few signal moments, and one comes next month, when the federal government puts Tim DeChristopher on trial in Salt Lake City. Tim -- "Bidder 70" -- pulled off one of the most creative protests against our runaway energy policy in years: he bid for the oil and gas leases on several parcels of federal land even though he had no money to pay for them, thus upending the auction. The government calls that "violating the Federal Onshore Oil and Gas Leasing Reform Act" and thinks he should spend ten years in jail for the crime; we call it a noble act, a profound gesture made on behalf of all of us and of the future. Tim's action drew national attention to the fact that the Bush Administration spent its dying days in office handing out a last round of favors to the oil and gas industry. After investigating irregularities in the auction, the Obama Administration took many of the leases off the table, with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar criticizing the process as "a headlong rush." And yet that same Administration is choosing to prosecute the young man who blew the whistle on this corrupt process." >>> Email us show ideas or interview requests to info@sustainable1000.com, Tweet us at @vannShane, IM on GTalk @ vannShane or call-in your questions or comments to (347)996-3601. Her goal was to help citizens and communities understand exposure and health effects of toxins in their environment. “No one was looking out for community groups,” Subra says about the early days of her company. Located in New Iberia, Louisiana, Subra Company offers technical assistance and provides the science. These services are needed for communities to get the attention of the industries responsible for the pollution, as well as the agencies responsible for protecting public health and the environment.“I’ve never had to turn anybody down,” Subra says. “They may have to wait a few days, but if they ask, I will do what I can to help them.” Subra and her husband try to carve out time for lunch together a couple of times during the week. On the day of this interview, while she was taking a lunch break, Subra received a call from Mr. Woody in False River. He lives near a meander of the Mississippi River and talks to Subra about the inappropriate sewage discharge in the river. Another call comes in from a woman who lives in Iberia Parish. She tells Subra that she and her neighbor are the only ones in her community who haven’t been diagnosed with cancer.
