A Violent Death, Not SuicideA 2019 coroner’s report on the death of a 27-year-old Inuit woman determined “This is a violent death”, not suicide as initially ruled by the Montreal Police, the SPVM.Siasi Tullaugak was found hanging from the small balcony of a Chomedey Street apartment on August 29, 2017. Within 24 hours, another Inuit woman, Sharon Baron’s body was found hanged in a closet inside her apartment in Dorval. In both cases the Montreal police considered the deaths of the two Inuit women as suicides. People who knew the two women said they suspected foul play, but when they tried to communicate this to the police their information was brushed aside. In the case of Baron, the Quebec coroner eventually ruled her death a suicide. In a March 2018 report, Dr. Louis Normandin wrote that Sharon Baron hung herself with a computer power cable, concluding that she died of compression asphyxiation of the neck structures following the hanging, finally determining, “It is a suicide.”Tullaugak’s coroner’s report wa

  • Why Murders Are Unsolved - Teresa Martin #8 / WKT5

    05/06/2021 Duration: 01h01min

Unless we explain what an open case is. Open case is simply the term used by our police forces to describe a case of murder that could not be solved in the days following the crime. After the rigorous interrogations, in fact, if the murderer has not been discovered and if the latter has not been denounced by a detainee, the police officers place statements and exhibits in a folder and file it. Investigators are then diverted to another cause. They will only resume the investigation if unexpected new information is added to the file. Otherwise, they or the murderer just has to shut their mouths and start over. In February 1970 - five months after the murder of Teresa Martin - the Surete du Quebec took over the investigation from the Montreal North police (reasons to be discussed later). In the spring of 1970 the mother of one of the girls, Huguette D, overheard a conversation between her daughter and one of her friends, Johanne H in which Johanne H stated that she knew who killed Teresa Martin. The mother of Huguette D then narced on her daughter and went to the police, resulting in the May 21 interrogation. These interviews were conducted by Laurin Lapointe and Roch Heroux, but they were under the authority of the Surete du Quebec homicide investigator, Sergent Marcel Ste-Marie. Before going any further we should know more about these men - and they were all men - who interrogated two teenage girls for well over an hour. For more information visit the website: http://theresaallore.com/2021/05/06/you-dont-have-a-name-in-your-head-teresa-martin-6-wkt5/

  • F.L. FRENCHY I LOVE YOU - Teresa Martin / WKT5 #2

    13/03/2021 Duration: 01h05min

Teresa Martin was meant to be found like that - displayed against the wall of that tavern on a Saturday morning, for families to see the ambulance and the squad cars as they drove on their way to hockey practice or garden centres, so it would be the topic of conversation all that weekend, and into Monday morning for the local boys and girls going to school. That's certain. For more information visit the website: www.theresaallore.com

  • Pattern Recognition - Teresa Martin / WKT5 #1

    27/02/2021 Duration: 54min

This is the 1969 unsolved murder of Teresa Martin."I am in no hurry to tell this story. I have a lot of information on this case, but I haven't quite figured out how to land the plane. I haven't completely worked out the staging. It has all the elements that you're accustomed to hearing on WTK - set in Quebec, unsolved murder, criminal investigative failures. Quebec lives in this echo chamber of delusion. If you think the fake-news era in the States is bad, Quebec has been living in a version of this landscape ever since Champlain planted a fleur-de-lis on The Mountain. What strikes me about this case is how the narrative has changed over the last 50 years. There is now a very controlled version of this story, and most of the elements that would help solve the case have been dropped. I don't buy the versions of this story peddled by the police and the press. • Missing from the Village - The Justin Ling Interview - WKT4 #14

    06/11/2020 Duration: 01h05min

In 2013, the Toronto Police Service announced that the disappearances of three men--Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Majeed Kayhan--from Toronto's gay village were, perhaps, linked. When the leads ran dry, the investigation was shut down, on paper classified as "open but suspended." By 2015, investigative journalist Justin Ling had begun to retrace investigators' steps, convinced there was evidence of a serial killer. Meanwhile, more men would go missing, and police would continue to deny that there was a threat to the community. On January 18, 2018, Bruce McArthur, a landscaper, would be arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. In February 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of eight men. This extraordinary book tells the complete story of the McArthur murders. Based on more than five years of in-depth reporting, this is also a story of police failure, of how the queer community responded, and the story of the eight men who went missing and the lives they left behind.
