The True Crime of Irene Schroeder Jump To AD-FREE Safe House EditionEpisode 32 takes place during the early days of the Great Depression, when one patrolman is killed and another seriously wounded while trying to prevent a trio of bandits who had robbed a department store in Western Pennsylvania from making a getaway. The surviving officer said it was not one of the two men who killed his partner, but the woman of the group, a young blonde, who was using her four-year-old son as a shield in the getaway. The Botched Execution of George H. PainterJump To AD FREE SAFE HOUSE EDITIONEpisode 27 starts shortly after midnight, the night of  May 17, 1891, when George H. Painter awoke the people living in his Chicago house shortly after midnight, shouting that his common law wife Alice Martin had been murdered. Painter himself went to fetch the police, who promptly arrested him for the murder. The trial made it a cut and dry case, and Painter was sentenced to hang, although he insisted his innocence up to the very end.  On September 19, 1910, a prowler broke into the home of Clarence Hiller in the Chicago neighborhood Morgan Park. When he awoke Hiller’s 13-year-old daughter, pandemonium erupted and before it was over, Hiller lay dead at the bottom of the stairs. In breaking into the house, Thomas Jennings left his left palm print in a freshly-painted porch rail. Those prints would be the first ever admitted into evidence.
