Sound Propositions

Informações:

Synopsis

Sound Propositions features conversations with artists exploring their creative practices and individual aesthetics, conceived of as a counter-narrative to a dominant trend in music journalism which fetishizes equipment and new technologies. This series tries to take the emphasis away from the what and shine light on the how and why. Each episode combines interviews with music, field-recordings, and experimental sound design. For fans of experimental music, field-recording, drone, electro-acoustic, ambient, modern composition, and other contemporary electronic music genres.

  • Sounding the housing crisis - Investigation Questions [bonus]

    02/02/2023 Duration: 35min

Last fall I shared the first episode of Sounding the Housing Crisis, a bilingual (French/English) podcast by a collective of Montreal sound artists and tenants. I co-produced the eight episode series with Hubert Gendron-Blais, organizing and editing the contributions from each member of the collective. The project was partially inspired by the “militant sound inquiry” of Ultra-Red. In 2021, Ultra-Red co-founder Dont Rhine visited Montreal for a seminar at McGill, followed by a workshop/performance as part of Echoes of a Distance, Music, Protest and Community in Confined Times, organized by Hubert and The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI). I'm now sharing the eighth episode in this feed as well, since it is one where I think my fingerprints are most visible. • With a real gone mama, don't let me take your style. [bonus]

    14/12/2022 Duration: 12min

I made this sound collage in early 2013, nearly a decade ago now, and listening back to it recently I can hear the early seeds of techniques I use in Sound Propositions. My friend Ian Stone Grey was producing a beautiful audio series called Portmanteau at that time, and he included a piano composition of mine in one episode. I was inspired to create some collages of my own that veered further away from music without becoming narrative.  A Portmanteau of sorts. Some treated field-recordings. Howlin Wolf. Federico Campagna on Novara Media. Gilles Deleuze on the ABCs. A phased stereo tape loop. Some edits from Bob Ostertag's Sooner or Later. —- Sound Propositions is written, recorded, mixed, and produced by Joseph Sannicandro. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soundpropositions/support

  • Episode 27: ATTUNEMENT - with Jessica Moss

    22/11/2022 Duration: 59min

Jessica Moss has just released Galaxy Heart, a surprising collection of ten songs that form a companion to last year’s Phosphenes. The Montréal-based composer, violinist, and vocalist recorded the material for both records (and more) during the peak of early pandemic lockdown, allowing her songcraft to take new forms, as well as welcoming collaborators into her solo music for the first time. Moss, of course, is a prolific collaborator, and we have been a fan of her work for over two decades, particularly her 15-year tenure with Silver Mt. Zion. In this episode, Moss dives into the making of her two recent solo albums, the highs and lows of pandemic touring, the return of Black Ox Orkestar,  and her collaborations with Vic Chesnutt and Jem Cohen. TRACKLIST Jessica Moss - “Enduring Oceans” (Galaxy Heart, Constellation, 2022) JM - “Memorizing And Forgetting” (Phosphenes, CST, 2021) “UNDER” (Under Plastic Island, self-released, 2015) “Uncanny Body [Violin Study #1]” (Galaxy Heart, CST, 2022) “Uncanny Being

While he’s been based in NYC for the better part of the last decade, he was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, which also happens to be where Sun Ra first landed on Earth. Brown’s just-released book, Assembling a Black Counter Culture, traces the cycles of American history through the Great Migrations from the Deep South to the industrial centers of the north and back again. In this episode, Brown discusses his profound sense of future shock, the meaning of rhythmanalysis, and the making of Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry, his critically acclaimed 2020 album.  Headphone listening recommended. • ACL mix for Secret Thirteen [bonus]

    07/09/2022 Duration: 01h13min

I'm still swamped with work, especially now that the semester has begun. New episodes will arrive later this fall. Until then, here is another bonus mix. It's probably my favorite mix I've ever done, made for Secret Thirteen, originally published in December 2014. S13 founder Justinas Mikulskis writes: “Secret Thirteen 139” is a picturesque and unique mix composed by Joseph Sannicandro. This mix is like a truly precious musical treasure every die-hard music lover could be searching for ages. In this over 1 hour long musical mosaic Joseph connects 55 pieces by his beloved and inspirational artists such as Tim Hecker, Vladislav Delay, Jon Hassell, Giuseppe Ielasi, Hue, Nicola Ratti, Machinefabriek, Klaus Schulze, MB, Steve Roden and many others, to form a complex, but at the same time a delightful soundscape. The opening and closing recordings by his The New Objective project tightly binds the overall mix’s concept and mood. The mix radiates a strange musical luminosity, which guides the mind and the soul to th

  • Ritmi Rurali (suonano ancora) [bonus]

    29/06/2022 Duration: 15min

I'm still in rural southern Italy as artist-in-residence, so I haven't had time to finish up the next regular episode of the podcast, which is a tenth anniversary celebration of ACL. But last week I was in Colle Sannita in the province of Benevento, where my paternal grandfather's mother grew up and where her family had deep roots. I conducted a multi-day workshop, mostly leading soundwalks with high school students. I also interviewed townsfolk of all ages, and made all kinds of recordings. On Sunday evening, as part of the return of Liminaria, I made a public presentation to town, giving a brief overview of sound studies and my artistic methodology, before presenting a live soundscape composition based on the recordings and interviews I'd conducted during my workshop. I present that piece to you here: Ritmi Rurali (suonano ancora). • Episode 25: IRREGARDS - with Matmos

    20/05/2022 Duration: 01h13s

The longrunning electronic duo Matmos have just released a gorgeous new LP, Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer. Whereas their previous album, 2020’s The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, saw the couple collaging contributions from 99 friends recorded at 99 bpm, their latest is dedicated to the work of just one person: Polish polymath Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019). In this episode, we discuss how their reputation for conceptualism has often served to obscure the formal characteristics of their work. Can an object be a concept? Is “washing machine” or “plastic” a concept? With their signature blend of serious humor, the pair reflect on touring with a washing machine, the practicalities of licensing music, and the complexities of working with Schaeffer’s archive. • Episode 24: KAKAPHONY - with Maria Chavez

    20/04/2022 Duration: 01h04min

Maria Chavez is a pioneer of Abstract Turntablism, a self-described practice she developed under the guidance of Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening. Born in Lima, Peru and raised in Houston, she cut her teeth as a DJ spinning techno and drum & bass, but the male chauvinism of that scene roused her to experiment further with the materiality of vinyl, using broken needles and non-musical sounds. Oliveros inspired her to ditch dance parties for improvisation with a single turntable, an artistic practice which has evolved to include installations, workshops, visual art, and curation. A true sound artist (she adamantly eschews the label “musician”), until recently, Chavez had released only one recording, 2004's Those Eyes Of Hers, focusing instead on her career as longform performance. But after beginning a medical sabbatical in 2019, which forced her to cease touring (a year before the rest of the world shut down), Maria began slowly releasing new recordings into the world. In this episode, we discuss recent an

    08/03/2022 Duration: 01h34s

Patrick Shiroishi is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist & composer based in Los Angeles, whose 2021 album Hidemi was one of our favorites of the year. A prolific collaborator, Shiroishi can also be heard in various duos, trios, and larger ensembles, including the quartet Fuubutsushi, another group that has been in steady rotation at ACL. In this episode, we reminisce about elementary school concert band and Third Wave ska, discuss his introduction to various modes of improvisation, and explore his love of black metal. Shiroishi also unpacks the importance of family history and ancestry to his work, particularly against the recent rise in anti-Asian racism. And as live performances pick up again, he  looks back on how the pandemic turned him into an unlikely proponent of online collaboration.
