How should Christians respond as their local college campuses, court houses, and other public spaces become cultural battlegrounds where groups fight for control of the past? Drawing on my own work curating museum-based exhibits of removed confederate statues, this session will begin by addressing the history of those statues, the motivations of those who erected them, and the meanings/uses of confederate statues today. It will then broaden out into a more general discussion about how history, heritage, memory and ritual play out in the present.

Alba Onofrio) introduces the Gospel of the Erotic as a way to facilitate deep connection to ourselves, to each other, and to the Divine through practices of Spiritual Discipline. The Erotic is deeply threatening to systems of domination that seek to control our bodies through guilt and shame, through coercion and violence. So how do we name and claim our desires in the face of spiritual domination and build our practice of noncompliance to evil? Let's find out together. How do we navigate the often suffocating pressure from well-meaning family members who worry that it isn’t just our eternal salvation that is now at risk but also our children’s? We parents in a faith shift need to connect and hear from each other that we aren’t alone. We need to share our resources, ideas, hearts, and space to be on this journey together.
