    Gail Merrifield Papp worked alongside Joseph Papp as he founded The Public Theater and was named the theater's Director of New Works Development. In that role, Gail was responsible for some of The Public Theater’s best-remembered productions, including FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF by Ntozake Shange, THE NORMAL HEART by Larry Kramer, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD by Rupert Holmes, and many others. Gail Merrifield and Joe Papp married in 1976 and were together until his death in 1991.     Last month, the 2023 Triangle Rising Star Awards took place at the Durham Performing Arts Center. This regional competition brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent the Triangle in The National High School Musical Theater (otherwise known as The Jimmy) Awards in New York City on June 26th. The national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions from all over the United States. Shortly after the Triangle Rising Star Awards, I had the great pleasure of going backstage at DPAC to interview both of this year's winners, Noah Colvin of Enloe High School and Lilly Pritchard of Heritage High School.     Almost two years ago, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Dustin Britt prior to a production of Peter Weiss’ MARAT/SADE he directed at St. John’s Metropolitan Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. Now, he’s back with them helming an upcoming production of Terrence McNally’s CORPUS CHRISTI, which will be taking place from June 1st-10th. Dustin is a Triangle-based theatremaker for more than twenty years as an actor, stage manager, designer, music director, playwright, educator, arts journalist, and director with over a dozen theatre companies.   • Remembering Ben Lipitz (1964-2023) of Broadway's THE LION KING

    Back in 2016, the national tour of THE LION KING played a month-long engagement at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to interview actor Ben Lipitz for BroadwayWorld by phone. At the time, he was in the show as Pumbaa, a part he played for more than 6,000 performances through both the tour and Broadway productions. Ben recently passed away on April 18th at the age of 58. So what I decided to do is share with all of you the aforementioned interview. I've also included a snippet from a conversation I had with the tour's head carpenter at the time, Billy Kimbley, as the show was loading into DPAC a few days before the run began.
