Former IRS Audit Supervisor Nellie Williams was my special guest on Success Profiles Radio this week. We discussed how the IRS works, how people are selected for audit, and what to do if you are contacted by them. We also discussed whether certain factors make someone more likely to be audited than someone else, as well as the importance of documentation when defending yourself in front of the IRS. Other topics of discussion included whether or not there is a statute of limitations on how far back the IRS can go in its investigation of your tax situation. We also talked about what happens when someone evades taxes and how much power the IRS really has. In addition, we discussed the impact of the recent "fiscal cliff" discussion in Congress on what the new tax laws might be and when we might be able to expect refunds this tax season.
