My Uncle Mike is a pillar of his community. I call him the mayor of Boksburg, a quiet mining town east of Johannesburg. Boksburg lies on the flight path to the busy OR Tambo International Airport. The roar of jet engines – that’s what I think of when I think of Reiger Park. But more about Uncle Mike. His family often jokes that when he ultimately kicks the bucket, they will keep the funeral hush hush (because there isn’t a hall big enough to accommodate all those mourners!). He had a close shave recently. An accidental reunion, if you will. During the struggle, he rubbed shoulders with who would become a political big wig. In the union trenches, a comrade and friend, Gwede Mantashe. They both hail from what was then known as the turbulent east rand townships. And they both still call it home today.
