When the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia, her parents and 4 siblings were forced out of their homes and sent into different labor camps. Thear, too young to work, stayed with her grandmother. After 4 years under the rule of the Khmer Rouge, it’s a miracle that their entire family survived as millions of people died during this time. After the Khmer Rouge were driven out, they walked for months not knowing where to go or what would happen. They would walk during the day. Find a place to sleep on the roadside at night.
