Synopsis

With Dom Hennequin Today we review a two hour window into the world of a small Mexico City neighbourhood in the 1970s. Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma is a semi-autobiographical look at what life was like in the area he grew up in. Specifically for Cleo, a young indigenous servant working for a white family. While the plot is simple, the cinematography is epic, exploring the vast landscape surrounding the gated house the family lives in, drawing comparisons to a Fellini film. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, two Golden Globes, and four Critics Choice Awards. And now Netflix, who distributed the it, will be hoping it can become the first foreign language film to win the Oscar for best picture. But can it do it? Cinema Crowd: Jemima Bucknell
