Manga Mavericks EP. 108: Anime NYC 2019, Part 2: Con Report
22/01/2020 Duration: 04h30minWe’re starting off this decade of the podcast by discussing a bunch of stuff we did last year! That’s right, it’s time to extensively cover all our adventures at the third convention we attended in 2019, Anime NYC! You’ve heard us go over all the news out of the con a few episodes ago, but this time around we’ll be going into what we personally did there - all the panels and events we attended, and all the people we met! It was a big con for us in many ways, and we got to hang out with a bunch of our friends that you’ll be hearing on this podcast, including Sakaki from the Weekly Shogakukan Edition twitter and blog, Jecka from the same blog, and Marion from Good Friends Anime Club, the Haikyuu podcast View from the Top, and an upcoming Dorohedoro podcast I’m excited to listen to! As you might have guessed, having five people on to discuss what they did at an incredibly busy event takes a while, which is how we’ve ended up with the 4+ hour long podcast you’re about to listen to. Believe it or not, this is bu

Manga Mavericks EP. 107: Golden Kamuy
28/12/2019 Duration: 02h56minOn this episode of Manga Mavericks, Lum and Colton are joined by cosplayer extraordinaire Diana Soreil, as well as Kelly Quinn Chiu from the One Panel Later podcast, to discuss Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy! Just in time for winter, Golden Kamuy is a tale about hunting for treasure while surviving the bitter freezing wilderness, as well as constant attacks from all kinds of weirdos, criminals or both. We discuss everything we love about Noda's master work, including how it manages to be thrilling, hilarious and educational all at the same time! Before that though, we also cover some news, as well as discuss our thoughts on first couple chapters of two of Shonen Jump's newest series: Zipman and Agravity Boys! Since this is our last podcast of the year, we want to thank everyone for listening and supporting us all throughout 2019! Look forward to some huge podcasts coming within the beginning of 2020, and hopefully a new decade of Manga Mavericks!!! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 0:00:00 - New Patreon Bonus Podcast! 0:04:

Manga Mavericks EP. 106: Anime NYC 2019: News and Interviews
21/12/2019 Duration: 02h02minA couple of months ago we did some massive podcasts to cover everything we did at Anime Expo, and now we’ve got to do the same for Anime NYC! We’re starting off with our long overdue roundup of all the news that came out of the con, which includes tons of licenses and some big announcements. We would’ve just attached the news to our con report, but that ended up being a five hours long conversation all by itself! So, rather than make a five and a half hour podcast, we thought it’d be better to just split it up into two episodes... I didn’t just want to make this a news-only podcast, though, so we’re also throwing in some special bonuses. That’s right, we’re including excerpts from all three of the interviews we recorded at the con! We interviewed veteran Pokemon actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz, and the father of Gundam himself - Yoshiyuki Tomino. I’ve been a huge fan of all three for a long time, so being able to interview them and discuss their careers and passions in person was an incredible exp

We also give our first impressions of the anime based on the trailers (this was recorded before the anime made its premiere on Japanese TV) and wonder how well Itagaki's may or may not work in the transition from comic to animation. Manga Mavericks EP. 102: Saint Seiya
10/11/2019 Duration: 02h48minSaint Seiya is a shonen manga classic, a trailblazer that codified so many of the tropes and themes the genre embraces to this day. Its influence looms large in the history of manga, inspiring generations of artists and storytellers, but despite being popular in most of the rest of the world it’s been criminally overlooked in the U.S. After a botched attempt by DiC to make it big in America in the early aughts, Netflix has recently reintroduced Saint Seiya to a new generation of fans by making a shiny new CGI remake and adding the old show to their service with a brand new english dub! Thanks to these new projects and Seven Seas’ ongoing release of the Saintia Sho spinoff series, things are looking bright for the future of Saint Seiya in the States! To celebrate Saint Seiya’s second coming, we’re taking a look back at Masami Kurumada’s original manga, and we’ve brought both the editor and translator of Viz’s editions of the series - Shaenon Garrity and Dr. Mari Morimoto - on to join us! Shaenon and Mari are

Manga Mavericks @ Movies #39: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
04/11/2019 Duration: 01h05minManga Mavericks @ Movies returns for the Fall movie season to cover all the new anime theatrical releases like One Piece: Stampede and the upcoming Konosuba movie! But before we can feast on the new, we’ve got to take care of some leftovers first. With I Want to Eat Your Pancreas finally out on blu-ray courtesy of Aniplex, now’s the perfect time to release our podcast we recorded on the film back in February after seeing its limited theatrical run. We actually recorded this episode a day after seeing Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission, despite the eight month gap between releasing that and this. But man, what a whiplash in quality those two films were! It feels like mysterious forces have tried to both force us not to see the movie and then prevent us from releasing this podcast to the public, but just like with “The Ghibli Conspiracy,” we would not be deterred! We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of its aesthetics its themes of living life to its fullest, and how it differs from the live-action film! Do

At least, you’ll get to hear Sakaki about half an hour in - there was, unfortunately, a mishap where his audio wasn’t recording for the first hour of our conversation, so we had to trim down some of our earlier discussion points. If he hadn’t lost that first hour, you guys would be listening to a five hour-long podcast instead of a four hour-long one! But don’t you fret - you guys will start hearing Sakaki once we get to the really exciting stuff, from the Dr. Stone premiere onwards! Yes indeed, we co
