Synopsis

Sergio Reyes, a senior at Leadership and Public Service High School in Lower Manhattan, was shot and killed by police after allegedly holding up a bodega with a fake gun in February 2017. Sergio’s classmates created this three-part podcast to honor their friend and explore the narratives and social forces surrounding the events that led to his death.The podcast began as a documentary theater piece written and performed by Sergio’s friends. Listen as the talk to Sergio’s friends and teachers, and to police officers, clergy, and other community members and grapple with Sergio’s death and the meaning of justice.The students were part of the Trinity Advocacy Apprentice program, a new initiative of TrinityChurch Wall Street. Primarily designed for High School students in local public schools, AdvocacyApprentices work on projects to address current justice issues in New York City through storytelling,visual art, community engagement, and service projects.
