  • Marbles and Jellyfish - Inhabiting the Hands - A Feldenkrais® Bell Hand Variation

    24/06/2022 Duration: 01h08min

Episode 84:  The second of a series of classes I am posting as an introduction to the Body Matter Feldenkrais® series, Soften the System.Today we take another Feldenkrais® approach to practicing the ability to settle the body. This class utilizes the powerful effect that calming the hands can have on our whole system. Our hands, palm, and fingers take up an enormous amount of room in our motor cortex. And if we can effectively calm and inhibit the unnecessary of activity in one area of the motor cortex, the process tends to spread and extend to other areas in the motor cortex.  Areas beyond just the hand can thus be affected. We think we are doing something with our hand, but we are doing something with our brain! Feel how the softening spreads, and the relaxed feeling generalizes throughout your whole system. If you resonate with TODAY’s approach, you may be interested in these self-paced Feldenkrais audio series:Soften the System Feldenkrais SeriesSensing Subtlety and Satisfaction Feldenkrais SeriesUnraveli

  • Full Body Grounding: Connections from Feet to Head

    27/05/2022 Duration: 38min

Episode 81:  A grounding practice that gives you effective learning tools for nervous system care, pain management, and finding ease while the body is in a stress response. This episode uses a rocking motion often associated with self soothing and we continue our look at neck care by zooming out to the whole system. This Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care connects the ankles, the pelvis, and the whole self to how the neck moves. It might seem like your ankles or feet would have nothing to do with your neck tension. So, let’s find out! If there is tension or a lot of pain in the neck, focusing only there and bringing more and more of your attention to the place that hurts may not always be a wise idea! If you resonate with TODAY’s approach or are finding that your neck pain may be linked to jaw tension, for an even deeper study of this topic from a Feldenkrais lens, you can check out the: Sensing Subtlety and Satisfaction Jaw Series, andUnraveling Body Anxiety Feldenkrais Series. To access all the neck care reso

  • Neck Care Part 4 - Neck and Shoulder Relationships

    20/05/2022 Duration: 36min

Episode 80:  A Feldenkrais approach to Neck Care, connecting the shoulders, the chest, and the whole self to how the neck moves, and how the neck can feel supported. With poor postural organization, it’s common that the muscles of your neck are forced to work overtime to hold your head up. If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you, and then return to those episodes. If you resonate with TODAY’s approachFor an even deeper study of this topic from a Feldenkrais lens, you can check out myFreeing the Neck and Shoulders Feldenkrais Series, andUnraveling Body Anxiety Feldenkrais Series. • Neck Care Part 3 - Mobility

    13/05/2022 Duration: 44min

Episode 79:  Neck Care Part 3 - Mobility. Part 1 was awareness, Part 2, strength, and now we will take a  more in depth look at stretching the neck safely. It’s important not to view the neck as something we tug and pull at and just stretch aggressively. This is why I am taking a comprehensive look at the many ways we can approach neck care. If you are trying all of the neck classes in this series, you can take note of which approach you are finding most helpful and supportive for you and then return to those episodes. If you are enjoying these neck care classes, and would like a longer version of the class, with visuals, I currently have a sample video class that works with these similar concepts, register to watch the class here. For an even deeper study of this topic you can check out my Freeing the Neck and Shoulders Series, and Unraveling Body Anxiety Series, both of which are Feldenkrais focused. • Neck Care Part 2 - Strength

    06/05/2022 Duration: 17min

Episode 78:  Improve text neck discomfort and build strength in the right places for your neck. Last week’s podcast was mostly awareness of the neck and releasing of unnecessary habitual tension held in the neck. This week, we take a look at how to strengthen the neck and reverse the effects of the forward and down head action, (sometimes referred to as “text neck”), and the pain that comes with that.  This class strengthens the upper back and neck extensors. Most of this class could be done sitting at your desk as a way to help learn some new and better habits for neck health and to take a short break from looking at your devices. Try it on its own, or pair it with Episode 77.Do you need some visuals for class? I currently have a sample video class that works with these similar concepts, register to watch the class here. • Neck Care Part 1 - Awareness

    29/04/2022 Duration: 45min

Episode 77:  A short 35 minute practice with a focus on neck care, awareness, and education. It is an example of how I blend yoga and Feldenkrais principles in my classes.  If you enjoyed this class, and would like a longer version of the class, with visuals, I currently have a sample video class that works with these similar concepts, register to watch the class here. There is not going to be a lot of deep neck stretching in this class. Over stretching the neck too aggressively is actually something we wanted to be kind of careful with. Our neck has a lot of potential for mobility. And sometimes we actually use the neck more than we need to because other parts of the body, particularly your thoracic spine, tend to be tight and this area of spine may not move as much as it could, thus borrowing the movement from the neck. So if you feel like your neck is working over time, this class is for you. You will need one yoga blanket rolled into a cylinder for class. And for an even deeper study of this topic you can

  • Bonus Episode: Interview with Pamela Seelig - Connecting to the Spirit Through the Body

    23/01/2022 Duration: 55min

This podcast is an intersection of my yoga teaching and my training in the Feldenkrais method. Today's bonus podcast is an interview with Pamela Seelig.  Pamela recently published her first book, Threads of Yoga. In this interview we discuss the spiritual aspect of yoga, what it is like to start out as a yoga teacher, responsibilities of a yoga teacher and student, how yoga can be a doorway to a meditation practice, and generally how one can use the body to be of service for regenerating a connection to the spirit. I think this interview is interesting for both yoga teachers and students alike. Something I have never done on this podcast is to talk a bit more about my own experiences as a teacher, and my training and philosophy around teaching yoga, so you will get a little window into that as well. Pamela was a pleasure to speak with and I hope you enjoy this interview.
