Buskers in the borough are protesting against the Council, which has been consulting on plans to force them to pay up to £123 for a licence to busk, with a fine of up to £1,000 for anyone playing without one. Youth unemployment at the UK rose sharply after the economic crash and remains stubbornly high. There are fears this could be leading to another ‘lost generation’ of Britain’s youth. Camden Council’s apprenticeship team are dedicated to helping young people into work. In Spring/Summer 2013 they ran an initiative called ‘Camden 100 in 100’. The idea was to create one-hundred apprenticeships in the borough in one-hundred days. To find out more about the scheme, Camden Community Radio interviewed Rahima Khanum, an apprentice at the Wellcome Trust on Euston Road, and Brian Lim, her manager. We also spoke to Michael Pratt, from the council’s apprenticeship team, and councillor Valerie Leech. Special thanks to Michael for all his help and to Rahima and Brian for giving up their time. The Amy Winehouse Foundation is celebrating what would have been Amy’s 30th Birthday with a festival in Camden. From 26th – 30th September, there will be a pop up shop at 69 Camden High Street selling donated goods and limited editions of new Amy Winehouse merchandise. Blues Kitchen and The Jazz Cafe have been holding events, Gilgamesh hosts ‘Friday I’m in Love Birthday Singalong, tonight. There will be cabaret and music in venues such as the Black Cap and the Jewish Museum. Tensions have flared between boaters and homeowners on London’s increasingly crowded canals. The focal point of the argument is in Islington where woodsmoke and late-night engine noise from the canal have been impacting local residents. But the overcrowding and stress on the canals stretches throughout the city and is serious enough to have prompted the London Assembly to launch an investigation. Its remit is to find out more about what problems there are and to suggest ways of solving them. Freddy Chick checked it out.
