On Sunday I watched the excellent live show, The Makings of a Murderer, with ex-detective David Swindle. This show is touring for the next year and will be at a theatre near you soon - I highly recommend buying a ticket and finding out much more about some of the investigations in which David has personally been involved, as well as other high-profile cases. David kindly agreed to chat with me about his past career and what he is currently doing, especially with helping the families of victims of crime abroad.David spent over 30 years in the police service, mainly in the CID.  His work as Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) saw him managing high profile and challenging UK cross border investigations including the Glasgow Airport Terrorist Investigation and the murder of Polish student Angelika Kluk in Glasgow. It was a dark, winters morning as the 10 men group carried out maintenance on the railway line near Tebay. The men wore their safety helmets to block out the noise of their machinery and there was no look-out as the line was closed in both directions. So when the 20 tonne wagon came hurtling down the track towards them at 40 miles per hour it was completely unexpected. As one fellow worker put it, "This was the worst nightmare for any rail man - an un-manned wagon coming straight at you out of the pitch darkness." Four men were killed instantly that morning and others injured in the tragedy. When at about 10.45pm the 999 call came through, the operator could never have known it was one they would never forget. Harry was found downstairs in the utility room. He had been shot once, through the back, piercing his heart and killing him almost instantly. Nicola was upstairs in the main bedroom. She had been shot 4 times, three times down stairs, and a further shot as she had made her way into the bedroom, presumably to escape. But in the story this week, Paul Longworth - the Commodore of the club - is increasingly cruel to his wife Tina, and openly nasty about her at the sailing club and with friends at work. So how many times have you been on public transport and somebody is behaving badly near you? Has it made you anxious, concerned or terrified? In the story today, we look at a bus travelling from Victoria in Central London to Lewisham. One passenger is agitated and angry and makes all 37 passengers feel uncomfortable. Last week, we looked at the murder of 26 year old Jong-Ok Shin, who was walking home from a Bournemouth nightclub and just metres from the door of her home when she was attacked and she tragically died from her injuries. There were no witnesses to this crime.Shortly afterwards, local drug addict Omar Benguit was arrested and convicted of murder and over 20 years later he is still in prison. But was he guilty of this dreadful crime? He says no and many believe his conviction to be unsafe.
