    The Highlands at Covington Catholic football game is certainly the marquee matchup in Northern Kentucky this week. "Oh man, it's a big deal up here," Highlands coach Bob Sphire said. Both teams have won six consecutive games entering the Class 5A showdown in Park Hills which is also the WCPO game of the week. "It is what high school sports is all about," CovCath coach Eddie Eviston said. CovCath (6-1) has won eight consecutive games over the Bluebirds (6-2) going back to 2016 but the past doesn't matter to the teams entering Friday night. "You have to play 48 minutes," Sphire said. "Every play can be the difference in the game. It's one of those slobbernockers. It's going to be old school in a lot of ways." That's when Moeller (6-0) plays host to Elder (5-1) in one of the most anticipated high school football games this season. Moeller can win the GCL South outright with a win.   • Winton Woods football team has won 14 consecutive games

    The Winton Woods High School football team hasn't missed a step since winning the ultimate prize in December. Winton Woods, the reigning Division II state champion, has won 14 consecutive games going back to Oct. 8, 2021. As the Warriors (5-0) prepare to host Anderson (3-2) Friday night, Winton Woods coach Chad Murphy joined the WCPO High School Insider podcast to discuss this season. Murphy was joined by senior wide receiver Carlos Cox Jr., senior defensive lineman Terren Macklin and senior running back KC Spears in the conversation about the program.   • Mason football team wants to leave a legacy beyond the game

    The Mason High School football program is all about unity this season. The Comets (3-1, 3-0 Greater Miami Conference) have certainly fulfilled that theme the first half of this regular season. "They wanted to become the tightest team in Mason history," Comets coach Brian Castner said. "They want to be able to have the legacy of 'Man, that team had phenomenal chemistry because they loved one another and they wanted to be tight.'" Castner was a featured guest on this week's WCPO High School Insider podcast as he discussed how his team bonded this summer, including how it addressed mental health, leadership and other lessons that set the foundation for the team to thrive on the field the past four weeks. "I've always said I'm going to make you a better person before I make you a better player," Castner said. "And this program is going to make us better people before it make us better players. Chemistry is huge." Castner said he was emotional after the Comets' first win over Colerain in program history Sept. 9. "

The Lions (3-0) are one of the top stories in Division III, Region 16 this season with a scheduled game against visiting Talawanda Friday night. New Richmond coach Brian Pitzer joined the WCPO High School Insider podcast to discuss the season including senior quarterback AJ Metzger, senior running back Laurence Smith and senior strong safety Jack Moore.     Winton Woods football coach Chad Murphy arrived home around 5 a.m. Friday but he didn't seem to mind at all. In fact, Murphy was all smiles two days later, reflecting on a state championship journey that no one at Winton Woods will ever forget. "It's just been a little surreal," Murphy said Sunday afternoon. "It's like it's set in but it hasn't. Do you know what I mean? It still seems like we're probably going to practice tomorrow and that kind of stuff. It's been wild."
