GRAMLINS?! The second episode of our Joe Dante miniseries covers an absolute masterpiece in the canon of both of our favorite genres: kids’ horror comedy and live action cartoon genre. This ep is all about heaping praise on a perfect movie, and a bit of Old-Man-Yells-At-Cloud lamentation about the current state of the studio comedy feature film. We…DO talk about the book? Clearly we’ve forgotten the faces of our fathers. Given the stature of the Dark Tower series within Stephen King’s body of work (and given that these are some of the only books Dan’s ever read), we had no choice but to break the King Me Promise and discuss the source material for this one. https://www.patreon.com/kingmepod This is easily the most exciting miniseries (for us, at least) since Wall to Wall Carpenter: a review of four selections by the inimitable Joe Dante. We’re starting with Dante’s first-ish feature from 1978, PIRANHA. Despite (or, perhaps, THANKS TO??) the constraints of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking, PIRANHA features many signature Joe Dante elements: swarm of nasty little guys, Looney Tunes-esque climactic setpieces, and Dick Miller. Also coming up in this run will be Gremlins, The ‘Burbs, and Small Soldiers.

Thus concludes our analysis of a confused and confusing recapitulation of a legitimately very good movie. This series will not be…mist. Lots of low points, but at least it escalates in some weird ways. And, if nothing else, it’s very cool to see the Fisher King from The Fisher King still getting work. We've heard of a lot of things, but the 2011 A&E miniseries BAG OF BONES? That we had not heard of! BAG OF BONES stars Pierce Brosnan as Mike Noonan, a novelist who's very busy mourning the death of his wife and becoming the legal guardian of a child he met earlier today. Over the course of the movie, and with the help of his dead wife's spirit, Mike learns important lessons about jazz and desecrating corpses. BAG OF BONES is lousy with King Tropes, and it takes on some very sensitive topics with a degree of nuance usually reserved for Pierce Brosnan's acting.
