This is definitely one of the more odd episodes of California's Gold. It really didn't seem like it at first. An eccentric guy builds a castle and left behind a structure that is now a monument to a bygone era. There are numerous stories like this throughout California. But once you scratch the surface of Scotty's Castle, and the less than scrupulous manner with which Walter Scott formed a life-long relationship with the Johnson's from Chicago, the wild and weird ways of Death Valley come into focus. Huell is really blowing us away this week!! Well, he almost gets blown away in the dust devils of death valley. This is Huell's first trip to the countries(in 1995) newest national park! Were in search for life in death valley and this episode does not disappoint, we'll be seeing all kinds of flowers, lizards, insects, even algae, the life is EVERYWHERE!! And believe or not, Huell once again, is able to find heaping helpings of California's GOLD!! Well, it took Huell a while to find it, but he finally found the hidden gold! First, he doesn't have to go far when he visits the La Brea Tarpits in Los Angeles. This prehistoric treasure trove of bones is unlike anywhere else in California. Then we head south to San Diego to visit the Junipero Serra Museum, location of the first settlement of Europeans on the entire west coast. Huell visits an archaeological dig, studying the first fort on the west coast! These places were hard to find but most definitely alllll GOLD!!! This week Huell is taking Chris and Allan to the MOST IMPORTANT PLACES!! First we get a glimpse of El Pueblo De Los Angeles, the birthplace of LA! Then we head south to Camp Pendleton to visit the former location of Vietnamese Refugee camps following the Vietnam War. After that we're going to Riverside to see Sherman Indian High School. A boarding school for Native American students from reservations all over the American West. These really are some important places, and they're all GOLD!! This week Huell is takin' it to back to basics. Were checking out some of California's most Golden crops, Olives and Berries. First we head up to Lindsay to visit the Graber Olive Farm and see how these most special and California style olives are grown, then Huell heads to Ontario to the Graber Olive House to see how the processing takes place. Then its just a short drive over to Buena Park to see America's first Theme Park, Knott's Berry Farm. Huell doesn't spend much time on the rides, instead focusing on the Ghost Town and Chicken Dinner Restaurant that made the whole park possible. We can't believe we have been doing this podcast for a whole year. We certainly had high hopes when we started and its been more fun than we could have imagined. To celebrate, we invited our friend Chaz in to have a lively discussion about Huell Howser with a person who is not a huge Huell fan. Its the beginning of season 5 of California's Gold, and Huell really outdid himself this week. We may be biased however, since were in Kern County visiting the Weedpatch Camp. This labor camp was built to house some of the 1 million migrants who came to California during the dust bowl. Huell and Louie come visit and former residents celebrate the times they shared there and teach the children of the current migrant workers who still call the Arvin Camp home all about those early dust bowl days. Don't be a fool, come see Huell, keep cool, in a pool......he even sits on a stool. Ok, maybe not that last one, but this week we certainly are keeping it cool in the desert. Huell is finding out historic ways people kept cool in the deserts of California. First we head to the Coachella Valley to visit an honest to goodness desert oasis. Huell will slip inside the eye of your mind, don't you know you might find, a better place to play? Oh, sorry, not that Oasis, this oasis is a wetland paradise right on the San Andreas Fault. After that, we head to Indio to see some desert submarines. These structures kept people cool through the hot summer nights by use of evaporative cooling. Its so cool you'll drool!!! This week on the show, the boys are headed up on stage. Well, were watching a show about being on stage. Huell does go on stage for a minute though. What stages might you ask? well we start at the world famous Hollywood Bowl, then were on to Laguna Beach to visit the Pageant of the Masters, a display of living art, or tableau vivant. Huell gets super stoked on this, and you hear it in his proclamation of "That is AMAZING!!" Then we head south to San Diego to visit the only outdoor organ in the world, the Spreckels organ is quite a monument in Balboa Park. and Huell goes INSIDE the organ. One this week's episode, Huell and the boyz are headed to the coast after spending last week inland. First we visit the Kelp forest of Monterey before heading inside the Monterey Bay Aquarium to get an up close and down under view of Kelp! This week is a big one, not only do Chris and Allan have a guest, but its the debut of the boys' favorite rendition of 'California, Here I Come!!' Jeremy is joining to give us the low-down on Fresno and the Burro Schmidt Tunnel. Fresno has one historical garden, and its all underground!! The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a State and National Historic Place. The Burro Schmidt Tunnel is in Eastern Kern County and you won't wanna miss Jeremy's first hand account. This week Huell is headed out on the high seas to visit one of the most remote places in California. Santa Barbara Island is part of the Channel Islands National Park and has one permanent resident. This week Huell is about the flowers. California flowers, to be exact, and not just poppies. First he heads up to Daffodil Hill in northern California. This week Huell is back on the ground and seeing what our 275 State Parks have to offer, well, two of them anyway. First we head South to Mitchell Caverns, the most remote of the State Parks and arguably one of the most beautiful caves in the West! Then we head North to Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Rock to see a natural and cultural place for the Miwok tribe. Huell will learn about and eat the acorn biscuits that were made in one of the over 1,000 grinding holes made in this State Park over the years. Its super bright shiny gold this week! Huell just couldn't keep his feet on the ground in this episode as he takes us gliding through the air over California. First were heading to Catalina Island to learn about the Pigeon Mail Service. You heard it, pigeons delivering the mail! Then we head east to Twentynine Palms and learn about the Glider Corp of World War II, and Huell and Louis get a first hand view of the desert in one of this silent gliders! Huell just can't get enough of the Gold Country! Were back up in Northern California this week looking at two very California of companies. First we visit Placerville and see how the Studebaker Car Company got started, and you'll be surprised to learn that it wasn't in cars at all! Now called Jack London State Historic Park, Huell is touring the grounds of London's 1400 acre estate and hears the entertaining and adventurous stories of Jack London. Its the season 4 premiere and Huell has us starting off with a bang...or maybe, a splash! Because this episode is all about water and how hard and fast it and go. We start it off at the Malakoff Diggin's State Historic Park to see how and we miners were blasting entire valley's away with high pressure hoses. Then we go west to California's Old Faithful, a roadside geyser that has been shooting off like clockwork for years. There's gold in them hills, and were back in California to find it!
