U.S. Agencies Grapple With Student Data Privacy Guidance for Schools
13/12/2017 Duration: 01minThe U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Trade Commission are struggling with how to guide schools on protecting students’ personal information while using educational technology. The information that is provided on devices like iPads, Laptops and other computers allow companies to gain information about their consumers. However, access to this information becomes a more difficult subject when that information is being taken from students using these devices for educational purposes. Thomas B. Pahl, the acting director of the FTC’s bureau of consumer protection said ”Both the FTC and the Department of Education think further discussion, and perhaps additional guidance, is warranted.” The discussion should “provide a roadmap for potential next steps the agencies can take.” There is no word on when either organization will have further guidance to provide educators and their students on the safety of their personal information when using these devices.
