This imagery is not just a momentary escape from ’the real world’ - rather it is a blessed glimpse through the veil to the current and eternal reality of Christ’s Lordship, his authority, his glory. He has the church in his hands. He has the future in his hands. He has the victory, and even through suffering and difficulty and struggle and pain - He is Lord!

Today's three oracles can be summarized thus: Wake up! There are doors that only God can open. There is a door that only the church can open.

What does it mean to identify with the last days? Scripturally, it is the time of opportunity for unbelievers to repent and turn to God, and of responsibility for believers to proclaim the gospel. It is exciting to live in a time with such promise! Salvation is here, and we still have the message of hope for a lost world.

In this message we are encouraged by the oracles given to the churches at Smyrna and Pergamum.

Part of the overarching message of Revelation is that we must remind ourselves to see things from heaven’s perspective. We must remember who it is that is speaking to us when we approach the Scripture. We must shake ourselves out of complacency and a ho-hum attitude toward God’s kingdom and accept that we have a part to play in walking in the light and freedom that Jesus purchased with his blood.

First and foremost, this is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the center of this book. All the imagery and drama build to the ultimate revelation of Jesus’ victory, glory and honor to him forever and ever. If you come to this book looking for answers outside of Jesus, you won’t find them. He is the reason for our hope.

Today, we end this series with “Follow Me”, the phrase Jesus used over 20 times in the gospels. It was a frequent command and invitation that he offered. Sometimes he said it to new followers, someone who had not yet begun to follow Jesus. But sometimes he said it to those who were already following him, showing that the decision to keep following is one we have to make regularly. We are going to have missteps - and we need to humbly acknowledge that and find the grace of God to help us as grow in him.

Learning from the Exodus story, we follow the footprints on the way to freedom to gain insight for our path.

The power of Pentecost is the power of generosity, the power to freely give. It is not positional. It is not about dominion. It is not about creating a hierarchy or ruling over others. It is about a leveling out of the field, of opening up access to God, it is about sharing the Good News, being a witness of Jesus, offering the freedom of forgiveness to everyone.

The story of the Bible is about the goodness of God, the love of God for us and for the world, and the truth of Jesus Christ. And there is a background of music throughout the biblical text. Singing is a naturally flowing response of God’s people and God’s creation to his goodness. The ability of song to capture emotions that otherwise cannot be expressed is a beautiful reality.

We are new creations in Christ! We look forward to the day when Jesus returns and we live in the new heaven and the new earth. We build our life on the new paradigm of the covenant established by the blood of Jesus. And because of all that, we also produce a new crop. The fruit of a life committed to Jesus is fresh, it is righteous, it is just, it is peaceable. Kindness and compassion, patience and joy, a sturdy faithfulness and a deep well of goodness. A knowledge of self that provides the necessary handles for self-control. These are the fruit the Spirit will produce in us. But we have a part to play. We have to tend the soil of our heart.

The “New Covenant” is the ultimate new paradigm - and it really is a shift, a change, that by the blood of Jesus, a new covenant was established.

What is it that makes us feel closer to God when we can get to that favorite place of ours in nature? Dr. Sandra Richter states: “It is because the cosmos in all of its beauty and complexity is a reflection of the God who made it."

The concept of “All Things New” is throughout the New Testament, and especially the reality of new birth. In Christ, you are a new creation. Whatever issues or sins or griefs or pains you have - there is hope for all things to be made new.

Jesus died. He was buried. And Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the scriptures said. This is what was preached because this is all we need. Don’t get caught up in your questions about the Bible and lose the Good News. Jesus is alive! This is the gospel by which we are saved!

The Passion of Christ, the suffering, the sacrifice, the surrender that he lived through culminating in his crucifixion - is the apex of Jesus’ desire for you. He passionately, fervently, ardently, desires to pour out his love in each of us.

The paradox is that for life to be full and fruitful, we will sometimes experience the destructive side of Jesus’ power.

Jesus Disrupts. There’s just something about Jesus. Things do not remain the same once Jesus comes on the scene. He has a way of changing the perspective, shifting the attention, challenging the assumptions, and sometimes even disregarding the rules. He rarely seems to have as a priority “keeping people comfortable.”
