There's a huge difference between what we're capable of and what the Spirit can do. Scripture is clear, a mind set on the flesh is death, but a mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. The law is powerless to defeat sin so Jesus had to do that for us. But then when it comes to "fighting sin" in our lives, it seems the task is put all on us. How does this make sense? God, our Father has unconditional love for us. We love because he first loved us. The only condition for that love was that He chose to give it, despite our flaws, our sin, our misses and our mistakes. While we were sinners Christ died for us. We're to love our neighbors and love our enemies as ourselves.
