Deep Dive: Learning Unplugged - Utah lawmakers look to further limit electronics in school
07/01/2026 Duration: 13minIn this special "Deep Dive," Maria Shilaos digs into several proposals from Utah's lawmakers to further restrict cell phones and other electronics in Utah schools. Several top leaders are working on legislation to keep tech out of the classroom, including a proposal to make schools phone-free all day... from "bell to bell." State Representative Doug Fiefia is working on what he calls the SAFE Act, which would push Utah's schools to return to analog-first teaching methods. It would also eliminate non-essential screen times and create rules for the use of artificial intelligence in schools. State Representative Ariel Defay is also working on legislation, a bill she's calling the Balance Act. This would remove technology for the youngest children in the school system, slowing phasing in new tech as the children age. Maria Shilaos hears from both lawmakers on their bills and from KSL NewsRadio's Eric Cabrera, who breaks down a recent news conference from top leaders, including Governor Spencer Cox.

Renovations of several historical buildings underway; delayed construction for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral
05/01/2026 Duration: 13minIt's been nearly 6 years since the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Salt Lake City sustained damage in the March 2020 earthquake. And renovation on the historic cathedral... still waiting to begin. Parish leadership say FEMA agreed to help fund 90% of the renovation project, but several delays -- including the longest government shutdown in history -- have pushed construction out further and further. Now, members of the Greek Orthodox community in Salt Lake continue to wait and wonder when renovations will actually begin. Several other historic buildings around the Salt Lake area are either being renovated right now or are about to be renovated. As the architecture around Utah changes, does it say anything about our society? Are we beginning to treasure older buildings more than before? In this segment, George Karahalios, Parish Council President of the Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake and Brandy Strand, executive director of Preservation Utah gives updates and share insights
