In addition to our classroom visits, we will give a brief welcomes for myself and some of our students and staff, and you will have the opportunity to learn more about PTSA, School Site Council, and our Gifted and Talented program. Monday is an A-Day with Period 1 starting at 10:05 am, followed by Periods 2, 3, and Advisory H and L. Our theme for this year is VAPA Strong: Into the Light as we CREATE, INSPIRE, UNIFY, and EDUCATE. This week we have our final textbook pick-up and registration paperwork return days. Please follow guidelines for mask-wearing and physical distancing on campus and be sure to wash your hand before you leave the house and when you return. Please also follow the schedule for when students pick-up books. 10th grade on Monday, 11th grade on Tuesday, and 12th grade on Wednesday. Opening of School Year and Welcome
14/08/2020 Duration: 02minOpening of School Year and Welcome August 13/16, 2020 Good evening. This is Dr. Trimis, Principal of Legacy Visual and Performing Arts High School, with an important message for our students and families. The first day of school will be August 18. The first two days of school, August 18 and 19, will focus on preparing for online learning. Students will spend Tuesday and Wednesday morning watching orientation videos about tools and strategies for online learning success, online safety, and digital citizenship. Students need to log on to lms.lausd.net with their username and password and click on their grade level (or homeroom advisory) to access their lessons. On Tuesday, August 18, at 1 pm, I will hold a virtual meeting to welcome you to our school and answer any questions you may have. We are living in unprecedented times and there is quite a bit of information that you need to know as we start the school year teaching and learning online. Please note even in the virtual or distance learning classroom, we are continuing to focus on student success which including on-track high school graduation, on-time attendance, and citizenship. Please note these days when students need to go to campus to return signed registration paperwork, pick up textbooks, and advanced instrumental students will also pick-up instruments. We have been working hard to prepare for a wonderful year for you full of fantastic learning opportunities from the classroom to the stage and beyond! We are excited about the many programs we offer that you will learn about from your Link Crew mentors to the Educare ACE program for all Freshmen. I hope to see you at Fall events, our Freshman Orientation event, Back-to-School Night, shows, concerts, recitals, and more! Please be aware that given the current health crisis we are all facing, we are not sure at this point what any of these will look like, but we are hopeful we will get back to more of a normal situation soon. Traditionally, our sports teams would be holding try-outs and practices after a Sports Orientation. We are in the final week of the Spring Semester. This week all students will be returning return any textbooks, library books, uniforms, instruments or equipment for school including performing groups, sports program. SENIORS will pay outstanding fines with the Student Store, return Chromebooks or other technology, and receive caps and gowns. 9th, 10th and 11th Graders will NOT return technology/Chromebooks and will not pay fines this week. ALL SPORTS equipment and uniforms as well as musical instruments will be returned on Monday only, 8:30 am-3 pm. Students are assigned times on their specific day and can get those times on Schoology. We will have a virtual Senior Awards on June 11 at 5 pm and Sports Orientation on Monday, June 15 at 5 pm, presented via YouTube Premier. We are in the final two weeks of the Spring Semester. This Friday, June 5, at their assigned time, seniors will return any textbooks, library books, uniforms, instruments or equipment for performing groups, sports equipment and uniforms, and pay any outstanding fees at the Student Store. After final clearance, seniors will receive their caps and gowns. 9th-11th grade students will follow the same return process on June 8-11 on assigned dates and times. This is Foster Care Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. 15-Week Progress Reports are out this week and there are 5 weeks of school left until summer. The last day of instruction is June 12, Summer School is Online and June 24-July 28, and the first day of instruction in the Fall is August 18. We wish our VAPA students all the best as they start taking Advanced Placement Exams this week. GRADE-SPECIFIC ANNOUNCEMENTS: SENIORS We will be making some deliveries to seniors this week on Tuesday including refunds and other paperwork. We are continuing teaching and learning online this week as I hope to continue to answer questions and provide more support for our students as well as the teachers who teach them. This week we celebrate National Teachers Week with National Teachers Day being Tuesday. Please give a shout-out or a thank you to your teachers this week! One of my early mentors in education, in the classroom and as a school leader, was Jon Liechty, the first principal I worked with as a full-time teacher at Berendo Middle School in the 80’s. Mr. Liechty always said, whenever he got the chance, that the classroom teacher is the most important person that works for the school district because their reach is far and the impact they make on kids’ lives on a daily basis is more than anyone else in our educational system. I’m sure you agree this has been an unprecedented time for all of us and I am sure not the way our seniors wanted to close their last year of high school. We are finding answers to questions as soon as possible and are working on plans to honor our seniors in a few different ways including signs and messages online. We have been featuring seniors on our social media sites and website. We are asking ALL seniors to send a photo and plans for college or whatever they will be doing after high school. We need these as soon as possible, ideally before Friday, May 1, so they may be featured in the slide show we are sending to LAUSD to be posted on the LAUSD website. At Legacy VAPA, we are continuing to connect with our students and community online. You may hear “virtual learning system” or “virtual academy” and these are all another way of saying “online school”. We will continue teaching and learning in the environment for the rest of the semester which ends June 12 and in summer school, June 24-July 28. Teachers will be holding regular office hours and teaching online, sometimes through live online sessions with their students and sometimes through e-mail and text communications, depending on the teacher and the class. We hold staff and community meetings on Zoom, one of the video conferencing platforms that many schools use. This week the South Gate Community of Schools will hold a Virtual Town Hall meeting on April 23 at 1 pm to provide an update on school services.
