  • Habit 12 | What are the mental health benefits of journaling?

    03/06/2018 Duration: 09min

My 12th habit in #26habits is going to be journaling. Why? Because there is endless research to show that the mental and physical benefits are nothing but positive. Improved cognitive function, stronger immune system, a general sense of calm - it's all at the end of your pen. But something as easy as writing is simple to overlook in the busy, tech-heavy world we live in, so what steps do I, and maybe you, need to take to make journaling a part of our every day.In this episode I examine the benefits, the ways to make it work for me and how to get the most out of each written entry... 27/05/2018 Duration: 10min

  • Habit 11 | Have I forgotten how to read?

    20/05/2018 Duration: 08min

Here's a habit I have fallen out of; reading. Sure, I read a tonne of articles on my phone that I've clicked through to from social media, but it's been a long time since I've read a book. It's not because I don't want to. I've started loads, but never finish them. It's time to rediscover the art of reading and for someone like me, who has a hive mind and is easily distracted, it's something that I need to put a bit of effort into. Do I need to employ the skills from my previous habits - meditation and minimising my tech use - to make this work? Let's find out... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  • Habit 10 | Will decluttering my wardrobe make me happier?

    06/05/2018 Duration: 17min

This #26habits, or a version of it, was something I didn’t feel brave, ready or inclined to do. I knew I wanted to get rid of everything in my wardrobe and start again, but the prospect of doing so was very easy to dismiss as ‘ridiculous’ and move away from quickly. In the last year I’ve had a series of spontaneous clear outs, but have never had the guts to tackle my closet - until now... I read Tessa Coates featureWhy Having Just 33 Items of Clothing Could Mean You Have More to WearonThe Pool and realised she’d given me the perfect stepping stone to my ultimate goal. The premise is to whittle down your wardrobe to just 33 items - the ones that don’t make the cut are kept out of site, donated or sold - and wear only these for three months. Even I didn’t realise why I was shying away from a wardrobe cleanse, until I followed the first step in the 333 Challenge and put every single item of clothing I own on my bed…Mentioned in the show:Project 333 by Courtney Carver. https://bemore

  • Habit 9 | How can I live a more environmentally friendly life?

    22/04/2018 Duration: 12min

Climate change is real. I'm not being flippant, but with some people questioning whether global warming is actually something we need to worry about it's time to look at some hard facts. Millions of tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean each year, plastic bags take upwards of 1000 years to degrade and knowing what can and can't be recycled isn't an easy as it maybe should be.In this ninth #26habits I'm looking at the small, sustainable changes I can make to the products and services I consume and the way I recycle that will stop me contributing to the problem. Just a small about of internet research and I found that things I thought could be recycled can't and vice versa. It's time to educate myself as much as it's time to make changes.Tune into the show to find out what steps I'll be taking over these next two weeks to break the habit of unwillingly contributing to climate change. To join the closed Facebook group please click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To email me directly please use thebeautypod

The ketogenic diet is a way of eating that starves your body of carbohydrates so that you switch from using sugar and glucose stores as energy to using fat as your main fuel source - in this update episode I tell you whether it's easy to change your diet and become a natural fat-burner. The benefits, incidentally, aren't just about fat-burning and weight loss, with many health professionals suggesting the long-term benefits of eating a ketogenic diet are massive.Much like intermittent fasting, habit number 6, immediate benefits are said to be better sleep, increased mental clarity and optimised endurance ability when exercising.Tune in to find out how it's been going...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. For the entire #26habits back catalogue visit The Pool. • Habit 8 | What is a ketogenic diet and how do I do it?

    08/04/2018 Duration: 14min

After the success of habit number 6 and intermittent fasting, I'm going to embark on another eating pattern that promises similar health benefits. While weight loss may be one side effect of the ketogenic diet, there's also a lot of evidence to suggest other physical and mental benefits such as improved clarity and increased physical endurance.I'm a card-carrying yo-yoer, I succeed at restricted calorie intake and intense exercise that eventually becomes unsustainable and am keen to find a way of eating that gives me long-term health benefits and helps me look the way I feel happy with without being an all-or-nothing approach. Here's the link to the ketone strips I'll be using during this #26habits >> Just Fitter Ketone Test Strips. If you want to join the conversation head over to the Facebook Group here >> The Emma Guns Show on Facebook. To view the #26habits back catalogue visit The Pool. In this update episode I update you as to whether setting rules around how and when I use my phone has reduced the amount of time I spend on my phone every day. I was clocking up six hours or more a day and in this show I tell you whether I've managed to bring that down to something that's less horrifying that a quarter of the entire day...To get in touch with the show email me on thebeautypodcast@gmail.com, follow me on instagram and twitter where I'm @emmaguns or join the Facebook group for the podcast here >> Facebook Forum. • Habit 7 | Can I break my smart phone addiction?

    25/03/2018 Duration: 15min

Phones are wonderful, aren't they? What used to be about making calls is now much more about having the internet, and therefore the entire world, within arms reach. I love my phone, but possibly a little too much. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm addicted and with research and statistics showing that this sort of addiction can affect your physical and mental health, it's time to put some limits in place so I don't fall foul of the luxury of having everything at my fingertips. It was Sali Hughes feature on The Pool - Smartphone Addiction made me anxious, restless and muddled - that left me with no doubt I had an issue with how much I was using my phone, whether that was to actually do something or just to while away the time. So, for my seventh #26habits I'm going to be putting limits on when I use my phone, will be changing a little-known setting to make it much less desirable, turning off a very specific function (clue: it's the one apps and sites always ask you turn on) and putting some physical distance between
