Synopsis

The 1960s was a fascinating time in history... and a hugely interesting time in cinema. This podcast is a look back at the films of the past (beginning in the 60's)- one at a time. We're revisiting classics and we're also tackling some of those movies we always meant to watch but never did. Expect conversation about Kubrik, Hitchcock, Fellini, Disney and much much more. Each episode will also include some of our trademark features such as Recastarama (where we recast the film using current actors) and Who Am I (where we work out who we would be in the film).

Episodes

  • 84- Ikiru (1950s)

    01/11/2024 Duration: 57min

In this episode- recorded back in late 2022- Kieran and I return to the 1950s with a discussion on 'Ikiru' from director Akira Kurosawa. And if you've never seen this film, it's a masterpiece. A solid gold classic. This episode was recorded as a Patreon exclusive episode (over at https://www.patreon.com/ErrP) but now it's free to listen to, for your audio entertainment. Enjoy!

  • 83- The Quatermass Xperiment (1950s)

    01/11/2024 Duration: 50min

In this episode (recorded on Alien Day in 2023) Kieran, Paul and I return to the 1950s to discuss 'The Quatermass Xperiment', a cracking British sci-fi horror movie from director Val Guest. Along the way we find time to discuss Dame Thora Hird, how electricity works, the Species films, 'trains stuff' and the (then) upcoming royal coronation. This episode was recorded as a Patreon exclusive episode (over at https://www.patreon.com/ErrP) but now it's free to listen to, for your audio entertainment. Enjoy!

  • 82- Early Summer (1950s)

    01/11/2024 Duration: 22min

In this solo episode on the film 'Early Summer', I complete the ERRP coverage of Yasujirō Ozu's 'Noriko trilogy'. And there is much to talk about with this movie: how it compares/ differs from the director's earlier work 'Late Spring', visual metaphors the filmmaker uses and how I personally relate to this story.

  • 67- Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom & Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1980s, Steven Spielberg #8)

    19/10/2024 Duration: 05h51min

Okay, this week I once again return to the SpielbergPod archives and to three episodes recorded back in 2015/2016. And these cover 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (which I covered with Jake), 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (which I discussed with Paul) and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (which Kieran and I talked about). So obviously, these were recorded many, many years ago (before 'Dial of Destiny' was even a glint in James Mangold's eye) but there's still some absolute gold here. And some impressions which, while were genuinely done out of love for these films and these characters, haven't aged well. Soz.

  • 66- Nescafé Gold Blend: The Gold Blend Couple (1980s / 1990s, Classic advertisement #6)

    13/10/2024 Duration: 39min

In this episode Kieran and I continue our coverage of classic advertisements with a look at the Nescafé ads featuring the Gold Blend couple (Anthony Head and Sharon Maughan). So you can expect lots of coffee chat (with a little tea talk thrown in for good measure), with Kieran having much to say about Australia's coffee culture. Oh, and the episode ends with the debut of the 90s theme music, as this episode is technically both an 80s ep AND a 90s episode.

  • 65- Blade Runner (1980s, Ridley Scott #4)

    06/10/2024 Duration: 01h23min

In this episode Paul and I finally wrap up #ScottSeptember (yes, I know what the date is) with a conversation on the Ridely Scott masterpiece, 'Blade Runner'. And we have much to discuss....

  • 64- Someone to Watch Over Me & Roxy Music: Avalon (1980s, Ridley Scott #6, 80's Music videos #2)

    21/09/2024 Duration: 13min

Happy weekend everyone! Today on the show- as part of #ScottSeptember- I talk about the Ridley Scott film 'Someone to Watch Over Me' and the Ridley Scott directed music video for 'Avalon' by Roxy Music. Two lesser talked about things in the career of the director that I thought it was intresting to find time to talk about during this mini-series. Anyway, next episode- it's 'Blade Runner'.

  • 63- Apple Macintosh: 1984 (1980s, Ridley Scott #4, Classic advertisement #5)

    15/09/2024 Duration: 25min

Continuing #ScottSeptember this episode sees Paul and I discuss Ridley Scott's iconic '1984' Apple Macintosh commercial (if you've never seen this, I strongly recommend you check this out on YouTube, it's a beut). Oh, and we recorded this in the summer of 2023 and so when I criticise the government/ the home office, I am slagging off the Conservative Party/ Robert Jenrick. Good riddance, etc.

  • 62- Black Rain (1980s, Ridley Scott #5)

    07/09/2024 Duration: 49min

Okey-dokey, #ScottSeptember continues with this episode- which eagle-earer listeners may note was recorded last summer- where Paul and I discuss Ridley Scott's 'Black Rain'. And there's talk of many of Scott's films in this ep as we spend a significant amount of time discussing the themes running throughout the director's filmography (during which Paul says something about 'Blade Runner 2049' which I 1000% disagree with- though I don't think I address that with him until our forthcoming 'Blade Runner' episode...).

  • 61- Legend (1980s, Ridley Scott #4)

    02/09/2024 Duration: 50min

It's #ScottSeptember baby as this episode (which Paul, Kieran and I recorded back in mid-December 2022) kicks off a run of Ridley Scott 1980s episode. Today's film is 'Legend', the director's 1985 fanasy film starring a pre-'Top Gun' Tom Crusie and so you can expect talk of 'Lord of the Rings', Game of Throne, director's cuts of films (a Scott staple), as well as misadventures in laundry. Enjoy!

  • 60- Beetlejuice (1980s)

    01/09/2024 Duration: 16min

Ahead of the release of 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' (weird title, but whatever) I decided this was the perfect time to sit down on mic and give my thoughts on the original 1988 Tim Burton film, 'Beetlejuice', along with my scepticsim about the upcoming sequel.

  • 59- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: The final scene (One Perfect Scene, Steven Spielberg #8)

    08/08/2024 Duration: 25min

This week it's mediations on love and loss with this 2022 conversation from the SpielbergPod archives. It's a One Perfect Scene episode, with Paul and I discussing the (super emotional) final scene of Steven Spielberg's 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'.

  • Fantasy Draft: 70s Mixtape (1970s)

    01/08/2024 Duration: 02h09min

Once again, recorded live and in-person in my front room, this episode sees Jake, Phil and I come up with mixtape playlists for our favourite 1970s songs, in the style of a fantasy draft.

  • 111- Hovis: Boy on the Bike (1970s, Ridley Scott #1, Classic advertisement #1)

    01/08/2024 Duration: 21min

In this episode Kieran, Paul and I look at the iconic 'Boy on the Bike' (also known as The Bike Ride and Bike Round) Hovis commercial from director Ridley Scott. This episode was recorded as a Patreon exclusive episode (over at https://www.patreon.com/ErrP) but now it's free to listen to, for your audio entertainment. Enjoy!

  • 110- Piranha (1970s)

    01/08/2024 Duration: 13min

Guess what- it's a 70s day people! In this short solo episode- recoded back in Spring 2023- I discuss Joe Dante's killer fish movie, 'Piranha', particularly noting its relationship to Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' and Dantes two Gremlins movies. This episode was recorded as a Patreon exclusive episode (over at https://www.patreon.com/ErrP) but now it's free to listen to, for your audio entertainment. Enjoy!

  • 58- A View to a Kill (1980s, James Bond #14)

    21/07/2024 Duration: 01h12min

This episode- recorded... uh.... about a week after the UK election- sees Paul, Kieran and I in a very, very good mood as we sit down to discuss the final James Bond film starring Roger Moore, 'A View To A Kill'. And we have much to discuss including: quiches, my fear of being run over by an invisible car, Dick van Dyke, going undercover in a crab-shack and what exactly is 'a view to a kill'.

  • 57- Aliens: Who's Laying These Eggs? (1980s, One Perfect Scene)

    14/07/2024 Duration: 47min

Okay, little backstory to this epsiode. On the sister podcast- the SpielbergPod (and the Patreon feed over at www.patreon.com/ERRP)- occassionally we do 'One Perfect Scene' epiosdes, where we discuss perfect scenes from films. Anyway, today's episode of ERRP is one of these, so it's me and Paul just* talking about one scene from James Cameron's 'Aliens' (*obvioulsly we talk a bunch about the the Alien franchise in general from the '79 original to Romulus, which comes out soon). And the specific scene we are talking about sees characters discuss the facehugger eggs (foreshadowing the queen) and Riply confronts Burke. Oh, and to compiicate things further, the scene is slightly different in the Director's Cut version of the film to the theatrical one, so we touch on both iterations of the scene.

  • 56- Conan the Barbarian (1980s)

    15/06/2024 Duration: 01h03min

In this episode- recorded late 2023- Paul and I return to the filmography of Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger, with a discussion on 'Conan the Barbarian'.

  • 55- Superman II (1980s)

    04/06/2024 Duration: 01h01min

In this episode Paul and I return to the world of DC Comics with a lively discussion on 'Superman II'.  (Note- eagle eared listeners may note I claim that Richard Donner directed the film 'Santa Claus: The Movie' and, upon review, it turns out I was talking complete rubbish).

  • 6- Brief Encounter (1940s)

    01/06/2024 Duration: 59min

In this episode- also recorded late 2023- Paul and I discuss the David Lean classic, 'Brief Encounter'. You can expect talk of trains, classic film romances and Bath buns.
